Q. Legislation
A. From 1 July 2015 the owner builder education requirement for a permit for owner builder work valued at more than $20,000 will comprise five units of competency from the Construction, Plumbing and Services Industry Training Package (CPC08). These five units are specifically:

  1. CPCCOHS2001A Apply OHS requirements, policies and procedures in the construction industry

  2. CPCCCM2001A Read and interpret plans and specifications

  3. CPCCCM1011A Undertake basic estimation and costing

  4. CPCCCM1013A Plan and organise work

  5. CPCCCM1014A Conduct workplace communication

Q. What is the Unique Student Identifier (USI)?
A. A USI is effectively an account or reference number made up of 10 numbers and letters which looks like AB45H9856K. The USI will allow all of an individual’s training records, entered in the national vocational education and training (VET) data collection, to be linked.

Q. Are we approved by the NSW Office of Fair Trading and ACT Planning and Land Authority?
A. Yes. We a Registered Training Organisation (Provider No. 91521), and we are an approved provider for NSW Fair Trading and ACT Planning Land Authority.
Q. Do I need a white-card to complete the NSW owner-builder course?
A. YES. If you do not already have a current general induction card (white card), you can do this online with us as well.
If you do have a current white card, then all we need is a copy of it sent to us via emai, fax or post.

Under Work Health and Safety (WHS) legislation, everyone working on construction sites (including owner builder projects) must be deemed to be competent, and are therefore required to successfully complete this course.
This WorkCover approved course is compulsory for anyone entering the building and construction industry who is over 14 years of age (including volunteers , full time students on Work Experience programmes and/or students seeking casual employment ) or anyone who has been out of the industry for more than 2 years.
Q. Do I have to complete the assessment in one sitting?
A. No. You can complete each module one question at a time and use the help button next to each question. Your results are saved everytime you press the `save answers` button. You can login and logout as many times as you like over however long you need.
Q. How long is the certificate (Statement of Attainment) valid for?
A. 1. NSW: Life, unless there are changes in legislation.
2. ACT: 2 years.
3. W.CARD: Life, unless there are changes in legislation.
Q. How much does it all cost?
A. For NSW: The cost is $185.
For ACT: The cost is $99.
For WHITE-CARD: The cost is $55.
Q. Do I need to study or buy booklets?
A. NO. You do NOT need to study or download any course material. Just log in and click on start your course.

Q. What is the pass mark for the assessment?
A. There is no pass mark. Students will be deemed competent in each assessment module that is being assessed in a holistic approach.
Q. Can I complete the course and sit the assessment from home?
A. YES. You can register and sit the assessment from any computer with an internet connection.
Q. How many times can I sit the online assessment?
A. We have a perfect pass rate. You work through each question using the help tool, until you answer each one correctly.
Q. Do I really need an owner builders licence/permit?
A. In NSW, If the cost of the owner-builder work exceeds $20,000, the Office of Fair Trading requires owner-builders to complete an approved education course.

Q. How long does it take to receive my "Statement of Attainment" in the mail after I pass the online exam?
A. We email you the certificate the same day you complete your course.

If you selected the express post option when registering, you can expect to receive your "Statement of Attainment" within 1 business day.

If you didn’t select the express post option when registering, your "Statement of Attainment" will reach you in 2-3 working days.

Q. What is the pass rate?
A. 100%. We help to ensure all our applicants meet the requirements of The Office of Fair Trading and The ACT Planning & Land Authority.
Q. How long do I have to sit the assessment after I register?
A. 5 years. There is no time limit as to when you have to sit the online exam. The login that you registered with, will be valid for 5 years.
Q. How many questions are there in the online assessment?
A. For NSW: There are 111 multiple choice and short answer questions and 38 Learning Activities.
FOR WHITE-CARD: There are 98 multiple choice questions.
For ACT: There are 20 multiple choice questions.
